Most people I know who’ve lived in these places find a rhythm. Weeknights are surprisingly calm, with the occasional laugh floating down the hallway. Weekends can be busier, especially at the start of semester when everyone’s still in that “say yes to everything” phase. If you’re someone who needs complete silence at all times, bring good headphones. If you like having people around but also want to retreat, you’ll probably be very happy.
It’s kind of funny how quickly you get used to being surrounded by other students. You start recognising people’s footsteps coming down the hallway. You can tell who’s cooking by the smell of what’s in the pan. I still think of coriander as “Oh, that reminds me of my neighbour who cooked at 1 am.”

There are some tiny practical things people forget to mention. Laundry, for example. Then there’s the fire alarm practice. The first time it goes off, you’ll probably jump out of your skin, grab your phone and run down the stairs in whatever you’re wearing. After a while, you can almost tell by the tone whether it’s a drill or someone got too enthusiastic with their toast.
Location really does shape your day
When I was choosing where to live, I spent ages checking tram routes and walking times to campus. It felt a bit obsessive at the time. But later, walking home after a late tutorial in winter, I was very glad I’d picked somewhere that was an easy trip.
Being close to your uni, or at least near a tram or train line that gets you there directly, makes everything smoother. Not just classes. Group projects, library sessions, late-night bubble tea runs. You’ll probably find yourself valuing things like a nearby supermarket or a cafe that does decent coffee at 7 am more than you expected.
One of my favourite small memories is walking back in the early evening along a busy street, hands cold around a takeaway chai, watching the light from all these tiny shopfronts spill onto the footpath. It was noisy and a bit chaotic and strangely comforting.

So, is purpose-built student accommodation right for you? It depends on what you need from your home. If you like having everything bundled together, security, bills, furniture, and you don’t want the drama of chasing up a random landlord, it makes a lot of sense. There’s something reassuring about knowing there’s reception downstairs if something breaks.
If you’re more independent, or you’re used to your own big kitchen and heaps of space, it might feel compact at first. You do learn to live with less stuff. My wardrobe became a rotating cast of “things I actually wear” instead of “things I might wear once to a party that never happens.”
It’s worth noting that the community aspect is the real wildcard. Some years, the building vibe is super social. Other times, it’s calmer and everyone is just doing their own thing. You can usually find your people either way, but if you’re very shy, it might take a little longer.
Final thoughts from someone who’s done it
To be honest, when I first moved in, I thought it’d just be a box I slept in while I studied. It turned into something a bit more than that. I still remember the sound of rain on the windows during exam season, the quiet murmur of people pacing the hallway with flashcards, the smell of instant noodles at almost every hour of the day.
Living in student housing in Melbourne isn’t perfect. Some days, the lift is slow, the laundry is full or someone leaves dishes in the sink a bit too long. But there are also rooftop sunsets, shared dinners and that nice little feeling when you swipe your card, step inside and think, alright, this is my place for now.
