I would have suggested upgrading your RAM only if I were in 2019. But things have changed.
While AI brings a lot of ease to our lives, it certainly does bring a lot of pain. The first was the fear of losing your job to AI, and now those AI data centers are consuming all the power.
RAM and other hardware generate that power, and that is exactly why their demands have gone through the roof. The simplest version of this whole approach is to avoid upgrading your RAM and instead invest in an upgraded monitor, better internet, and stuff like that.
If you have been looking to build or upgrade your PC, here is how I suggest you start with that in 2026.
Upgrade Your Monitor
The RAM isn’t possible to upgrade, but that doesn’t mean every other component is behaving the same. For example, the monitor is one of the parts that plays a key role in a good gaming experience.
So, why not upgrade it?
Another reason to have your monitor upgraded is the future-proofing. You might not be able to shell out money to upgrade your PC at once, but when you do, you will have one aspect compatible with every other aspect. And that’s why I suggest upgrading your monitor.
What do you call an upgrade? For example, if you are on a 1080p display, then upgrading it to a 1440p would be a plus. However, if you are already on the 1440p panel, then a 4K panel will be an upgrade. The refresh rate goes without saying – 120Hz is the bare minimum you should go for in a gaming monitor. 144Hz is better for gaming, and 165Hz is better than that.
240Hz is the epitome of the ultimate gaming monitor for the smoothest gaming experience.
Lastly, some of you might not even consider this an upgrade when it comes to the gaming setup. But they can’t deny the importance of a great gaming monitor, especially when they are looking at every move, every frame on that very screen.
Upgrade Your Headset
This is another key component that you might want to upgrade on your gaming PC. Why is it important?
The first reason is very obvious: when gaming, sound is very important. If you can only see and not hear, you won’t know who is camping right around the stairs. And this is important.
So, you might want to upgrade your headset.
Speaking of which, what are the things you should look for to upgrade the headset? Well, for starters, suggest just a balanced sound. It should not be overly bass-y, nor should it undercut the lows. The lows are important because when there is a slight movement, it would be carried over the low sound waves. SO, it should be good.
Another thing that you should consider when choosing the best headset is comfort. After all, you’d be using it for longer sessions, so the comfort should be the best.
Oh, and the wired headphones are better than the wireless, specifically for gaming. Otherwise, you’d just be dealing with voice delays and a little worse sound quality. So, do try to get the hang of the wired ones.
Upgrade Your Internet Connection
You’d be having the best of the best RAM, the most powerful GPU, and a monitor tailor-made for gaming, and yet you might struggle to have the best gaming experience, solely because your internet connection keeps struggling.
That’s why having a stable and fast internet connection should be your utmost priority.
If you’d ask me for a suggestion, I’d say Spectrum because I have been using it for a while now, and I have yet to have any trouble with it. Its fiber-powered infrastructure keeps latency low, and the Spectrum customer service helps me quickly troubleshoot issues that occur rarely.
The rule of thumb here would be to go with a fiber internet. Fiber internet is scarce, so the next best bet is cable internet. These two are the best when it comes to gaming. The rest of them are fine, but you won’t have as good a gaming experience.
So, yeah, do upgrade your internet connection before you upgrade anything else.
Upgrade Your GPU
You might not find it inexpensive, but it is still worth checking out. The GPU is the heart of a gaming experience because all of those graphics are processed in a GPU.
The AI data centers still rely on the GPU to compute the prompts on their own server, but the crisis isn’t as huge as that of the RAM. So, you’d likely find it at a fair price unless the RAM.
To wrap this topic up, I’d give you a pro tip: go into the used market to get all of these components for a significantly lower price.
