Part-Time Executive MBA in Singapore: What It Really Takes to Finish One

Damien once summed up his Executive MBA year like this: running two full-time jobs and sleeping like it was optional. He was not exaggerating for effect. Regional operations director, two young kids at home, a wife who was, in his words, “a saint about the whole thing,” and somewhere in between all of that, case studies finished at midnight on a Tuesday because there was no other slot left in the week.

I asked him afterward if he would do it again. Yes, instantly, no pause. Then he added something that stuck with me: he wished someone had told him honestly what those eighteen months would feel like before he signed anything.

Most articles about the part-time Executive MBA jump straight to rankings and accreditation. Fair enough, those matter. But almost nobody talks about the actual experience of living through one. So let me try that instead.

“Part-Time” Is a Slightly Misleading Word

Worth clearing up early, because it trips people up.

Part-time refers to your job status, not the workload. You keep working full-time. The MBA sits on top of that, not instead of it.

Most programmes in Singapore run 18 to 24 months. The format usually mixes intensive weekend or block-release workshops with online study you fit around everything else. Between sessions there are readings, group work, individual papers, and typically a capstone project near the end that ties the whole thing together into one large strategic piece of work.

If you are already running a senior role, this is genuinely hard without some ruthless planning. Damien said the hardest adjustment was not intellectual at all. It was logistical. Which evenings were completely off-limits for family. Which weekends belonged to coursework, no exceptions. Learning to say no to things he would normally have said yes to without thinking twice.

Why Do This to Yourself, Then?

Fair question, given everything above.

Usually it comes down to one specific gap that has become too obvious to keep ignoring. Senior professionals in Singapore rarely sign up for an EMBA out of general curiosity. They sign up because instinct and years of experience have stopped being quite enough, and they want something more structured to build the strategic muscle the next level demands.

There is also the cohort, which gets undersold constantly. Everyone in the room is already leading teams, running units, managing serious budgets. Nobody is theorising about a case study they have never had to actually implement. Everyone is working through live problems they are also facing back at their own desks.

Singapore adds its own layer here. This city sits in the middle of regional business across finance, logistics, tech, professional services. Senior leaders are expected to move across markets and functions now, not just stay competent within one lane. The EMBA is one of the more direct routes to that range, without stepping away from the career you already have.

What to Actually Check Before Signing Anything

Given the money and the time involved, a healthy dose of scepticism when comparing programmes serves you well.

Triple accreditation should be a hard requirement, not a nice-to-have. AMBA, AACSB, and EQUIS, all three. Fewer than 1% of business schools worldwide manage it. At this price point, and with this much of your life on the line, skipping this check is a mistake.

Check the admissions bar for experience. Strong programmes want candidates with real management experience already, often ten years plus, and actual leadership responsibility right now. This is not gatekeeping for its own sake. It shapes who ends up sitting next to you, which shapes almost everything about the classroom experience.

Confirm what degree lands in your hands at the end. Some joint or partnership programmes issue something slightly different from what full-time, on-campus students at the same school receive. Ask directly. Is it identical internationally? Yes or no, get a straight answer.

Be honest with yourself about the format against your actual life. Block-release weekends suit some people brilliantly and wreck others, depending on family, travel, energy levels. Talk to someone who has already been through it if you possibly can. Ask what an average month actually looked like, not what the brochure claims it looks like.

Ask what the overseas modules actually involve. They should put you inside real business environments in markets you do not already know, not function as a photo opportunity bolted onto the curriculum. Ask a past cohort what they genuinely got out of it.

The Manchester Global Executive MBA

If you are building out a serious shortlist, the Part-Time Executive MBA in Singapore offered by Alliance Manchester Business School through Manchester Worldwide (S.E. Asia) belongs on it.

Alliance Manchester Business School holds triple accreditation across AMBA, AACSB, and EQUIS. The University of Manchester ranks 34th globally in the QS World University Rankings 2024, founded in 1824, 26 Nobel Laureates connected to its history.

The programme runs on a blended format built specifically around senior professional life: structured workshop sessions combined with online study. The degree you receive is the full University of Manchester qualification, the same one given to students on campus in the UK. Not a local variant, not a jointly badged version.

Manchester Worldwide (S.E. Asia) operates out of 80 Robinson Road in the Singapore CBD, the only wholly-owned physical centre of a major UK university in the country, running since 1999. That ownership structure matters more than it sounds. It means faculty and academic standards connect directly back to Manchester itself, not through some licensing arrangement three steps removed.

The cohort spans 21 nationalities and more than 20 industry sectors. Overseas elective workshops happen in Dubai, Hong Kong, Manchester, and Shanghai, with accommodation covered in two of those cities. Graduates join a network of over 550,000 University of Manchester alumni across 190 countries, including more than 60,000 AMBS alumni in 176 of them.

What Damien Would Say to You Right Now

I checked in with him a couple of years after he finished. Asked if the degree actually changed anything.

He was careful about it. Hard to separate the MBA from the natural progression his career was already on, he said. But he could point to specific moments. A restructuring proposal he built with a rigour he simply did not have before. A boardroom presentation where he felt equipped instead of just rehearsed.

Also, yes, the sleep deprivation was real, and yes, he would still do it again without changing much.

That is probably the most honest summary anyone can give you. It will be harder than any brochure admits. For the right person, at the right point in their career, it is also worth exactly what it costs.

Skip the extra comparison articles at this point. Talk directly to the admissions team of whichever programme you are seriously weighing, and if you can, talk to someone who has actually lived through it.
